Beyond the Face: Your Neck and Décolleté Deserve Care, Too

Have you ever noticed how your skincare routine ends right at your jawline?

We spend time choosing cleansers, serums, and moisturizers for our faces, yet the skin just below is often left with whatever is left on our fingertips.

Our neck and décolleté, the lovely French word for the upper chest, have been with us through every sunny walk, every season, and every chapter of life. They deserve the same kindness we give our faces.

Not because they need to look younger. Simply because they are part of us.

Why This Skin May Need a Gentler Touch

The skin on the neck and upper chest can be more reactive than we expect.

It moves constantly, is often exposed to sunlight, and may feel drier or less comfortable as we get older. Products that feel perfectly fine on the cheeks may sting or irritate the neck.

This is not a reason to buy a separate shelf of products. It is a reason to pay attention.

Your skin will usually tell you when something feels like too much.

Extend the Care You Already Give Your Face

Start with cleansing.

As you wash your face, gently include your neck and the upper chest when needed. Use lukewarm water and your fingertips or a very soft cloth. There is no need to scrub.

After cleansing, carry your hydrating serum or moisturizer down past your jawline to your collarbones.

Think of it as extending the same loving gesture, rather than adding another step.

If you are prone to breakouts on your chest, choose textures that feel comfortable and do not clog your skin.

And please be cautious with strong exfoliants or retinoids. The neck may not tolerate the same frequency or strength as the face.

More is not necessarily better, especially when the skin feels sensitive.

Remember the Sunshine, Even in October

Here in Marin, a cool morning can turn into a beautifully sunny afternoon.

When your neck or chest is exposed, apply the same sun protection to those areas as you do to your face.

Choose a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and reapply about every two hours when outdoors, or after swimming or sweating.

A scarf or a higher neckline can provide an extra layer of protection, but neither replaces sunscreen on exposed skin.

Make It a Small Ritual

Tomorrow morning, before you rush into the day, take ten extra seconds.

Warm your moisturizer between your hands.

Smooth it gently over your neck and across your upper chest.

Relax your shoulders.

Notice your breath.

There is no need to pull your skin, chase every line, or inspect yourself for something to fix.

The lines and changes you see are not failures. They are part of a body that has carried you through a lifetime.

At Body Celebration in San Rafael, I include the neck and décolleté in my facial treatments because skincare should feel complete and caring, not stop at an imaginary line under the chin.

If your skin is changing and you are unsure what it needs, we can find a gentle approach together.

Be kind to your skin. She's listening.
