Can You Still Improve Age Spots at 78?

Can You Still Improve Age Spots at 78?

July 22, 2026|Skin Health|Corinna Joy Kavanagh

A few days ago, one of my readers sent me this question:

"I'm 78 years old and grew up on the beach. Is there anything I can do at this late stage about age spots that doesn't require expensive ongoing treatments?"

When I read her email, I smiled. Not because it's an easy question, but because I know she isn't the only one wondering.

After more than 34 years as an esthetician, I've heard versions of this question from women in their fifties, sixties, seventies, and eighties. The question underneath is almost always the same:

"Is it too late?"

The good news is no. It is almost never too late to improve the health of your skin. The goal simply changes.

What Are Age Spots, and Can They Still Improve?

Age spots, also called sun spots or solar lentigines, are little reminders of a lifetime spent outdoors. They don't appear because of one sunny afternoon. They develop over many years as your skin responds to repeated ultraviolet exposure. That means they usually don't disappear overnight either.

Unfortunately, social media often makes it sound as though one miracle cream or one laser treatment will erase decades of sun damage. Real skin doesn't work that way.

The encouraging news is that your skin continues to renew itself throughout your life. Even in your seventies and eighties, your skin can still become healthier.

What Actually Helps?

The biggest difference comes from consistency, not perfection.

Daily sun protection is still the single most important step, even if the damage happened years ago. Preventing additional pigmentation gives your skin the opportunity to improve instead of constantly trying to catch up.

Consistency matters more than having an elaborate routine. Healthy skin isn't built by using ten products for one week. It's built by doing a few simple things well, day after day.

Ingredients that support healthy pigment can gradually brighten discoloration. Depending on your skin, this may include vitamin C, niacinamide, azelaic acid, gentle retinoids, or carefully selected exfoliants. The key isn't chasing the newest trend. It's choosing products that fit your skin's needs.

Professional treatments can also be helpful. Chemical peels, IPL, and other pigment treatments may significantly improve age spots for the right person. For others, especially if the skin is thin or sensitive, a gentler approach may be the wiser choice. This is one reason I never believe in one-size-fits-all skincare.

What Doesn't Work

I wish I could tell you there's one cream that completely removes age spots forever.

There isn't.

Be cautious of products that promise dramatic results in just a few days. Your skin deserves better than marketing hype. Real improvement comes from supporting your skin consistently and patiently.

My Philosophy Has Changed

After more than three decades of working with skin, I've noticed something interesting.

The women whose skin ages most beautifully aren't necessarily the ones spending the most money.

They're the women who protect their skin, stay consistent with their routine, manage stress, get enough sleep, nourish themselves well, and perhaps most importantly, treat themselves with kindness.

Healthy skin is about so much more than reducing a dark spot. It's about supporting your skin so it can continue to function well for the rest of your life.

It's Never Too Late

So, what did I tell my reader?

I told her yes.

There is absolutely something she can do.

Will every age spot disappear?

Probably not.

Can her skin become healthier, brighter, stronger, and more resilient?

Absolutely.

Your skin is alive. It is constantly changing, constantly adapting, and constantly responding to how you care for it. No matter your age, every small act of care matters.

And perhaps that's the most beautiful part.

You don't have to chase perfect skin.

You simply have to care for the skin you're in.

Wondering Where to Begin?

Every person's skin is different, which means the best approach is always one that's tailored to your skin, your lifestyle, and your goals.

Whether you visit me in my San Rafael studio or work with me virtually from anywhere, I'd be honored to help you create a realistic plan that supports healthy, radiant skin at every age.

Frequently Asked Questions About Age Spots

Can age spots disappear naturally?

Age spots rarely disappear completely on their own, but with consistent skincare and sun protection, they can often become lighter over time.

What's the difference between age spots and freckles?

Freckles tend to darken with sun exposure and fade when sun exposure decreases. Age spots are caused by years of cumulative sun damage and usually remain visible.

When should I have an age spot checked by a dermatologist?

If a spot changes rapidly, bleeds, becomes irregular in shape or color, or looks different from your other spots, have it evaluated by a dermatologist. Not every dark spot is simply an age spot.
