If Your Skincare Burns, Does That Mean It’s Working?
“If it tingles, it must be working.”
I hear some version of this surprisingly often.
There is a long standing idea in skincare that we need to feel a product working. A little burning, stinging, redness or peeling can almost feel reassuring, as though something powerful must be happening.
But discomfort is not a measure of effectiveness.
Sometimes, it is simply your skin asking you to pay attention.
Your Skin Shouldn’t Have to Hurt to Change
Certain ingredients and professional treatments can create temporary sensations in the skin. But persistent burning, stinging, itching or redness should not automatically be accepted as the price we have to pay for healthier skin.
Your skin has a protective barrier for a reason. It helps keep moisture in while helping protect you from irritants and the outside environment.
When that barrier becomes compromised, your skin may suddenly feel more reactive. Products that never bothered you before may begin to sting. Your skin may feel tight after cleansing, become unusually dry, or look red and inflamed.
The answer is not always another active ingredient.
Sometimes the most effective thing we can do is calm everything down.
More Is Not Always Better
This is especially important because I often see women respond to changing skin by doing more.
They add another acid. A stronger retinol. Another exfoliant. A new serum.
When the skin is already stressed, layering more active products onto it can sometimes create even more irritation.
Instead, I often recommend simplifying.
Gentle cleansing, hydration, moisturizing, sun protection and products chosen specifically for your skin can give the barrier the support it needs.
This may not sound as exciting as the newest trending ingredient, but healthy skin does not always need excitement.
Sometimes it needs consistency.
Listen Before You Treat
After more than 20 years of working with skin, one of the most important things I have learned is that skin gives us information.
Burning is information.
Stinging is information.
Persistent redness is information.
Instead of immediately trying to overpower those signals, I want to understand what the skin is telling me.
That is an important part of my Conscious Beauty Method. I am interested in results, but I don't believe results have to come through aggression.
We can support change while still respecting the skin.
When Your Skin Suddenly Becomes Reactive
If products you've used for years suddenly begin to sting, or your skin has become dry, red or unusually sensitive, don't assume you simply need a stronger product.
Your skin changes throughout your life. Hormones, stress, environment, lifestyle, health and the products you're using can all influence what your skin needs today.
And what worked beautifully five years ago may not be what your skin needs now.
Sometimes the first step toward healthier skin isn't adding something.
If your skin feels reactive and you no longer know what to use, I can help you create a calmer, more personalized approach.
