What Is Your Skin Trying to Tell You?

What Is Your Skin Trying to Tell You?

I often tell my clients that skin is constantly communicating with us.

Tightness, redness, flaking, congestion, sensitivity, unexpected breakouts- these aren't simply things we need to get rid of. They are information.

And one of the biggest mistakes I see in skincare is responding to that information by immediately doing more.

Skin feels rough? Exfoliate it.

A breakout appears? Dry it out.

Pigmentation gets darker? Add another active.

Skin looks older? Reach for something stronger.

But sometimes the best thing we can do is stop and ask a different question:

What does my skin actually need?

More isn't always better

I see quite a few new clients whose skin is overwhelmed.

They may be using several serums, acids, retinoids, exfoliants, and masks because they've been told each one addresses a different concern.

Individually, some of those products may be wonderful. Together, they can simply be too much for that particular person's skin.

When the skin barrier becomes compromised, you may notice dryness, sensitivity, redness, stinging, or a feeling that suddenly everything irritates your skin.

That's not the time to declare war on your face.

It's time to support it.

Sometimes when I work with a new client, the first thing I do is actually simplify her routine. We concentrate on gentle cleansing, hydration, nourishment and protection, and give the skin a chance to settle.

Then we can see what it truly needs.

Your skin isn't the same skin you had ten years ago

This is particularly important as we get older.

Our skin changes. Hormones change. Oil production changes. Our ability to retain moisture changes. Our lifestyle changes.

So why should we expect the exact same skincare routine to work forever?

I don't believe skincare should be about chasing the face you had at 30.

I want your skin at 50, 60, 70 and beyond to be the healthiest, most vibrant version of the skin you have now.

That may mean treating pigmentation or encouraging collagen production. It may mean microcurrent, a peel, microchanneling, or simply a beautiful nourishing facial.

But the treatment should come from understanding your skin, not from believing there is something wrong with your face.

That's the difference between correcting your skin and caring for it.

And for me, that's what Conscious Beauty is really about.

Listening rather than fighting.

Supporting rather than punishing.

And allowing yourself to be beautifully, visibly you.
